Open Positions

I am actively recruiting motivated researchers at at levels who are excited about wearable robotics, human locomotion, stability control, and physical human–robot interaction.

PhD Students (Spring / Fall 2027 intake)

I am recruiting PhD students for the 2027 intake.

Helpful backgrounds (not all required):

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's in engineering (e.g., MAE/BME/EE), robotics, control, computer science, applied mathematics, or related fields.
  • Experience: Research experience through thesis, projects, or industry R&D (helpful but not required if you demonstrate strong potential).
  • Skills: Programming (Python/MATLAB/C/C++) and/or experimental skills (e.g., motion capture, musculoskeletal simulation).

Funding: Most PhD positions will be fully funded through one of our projects. Applicants are also welcome to apply for external fellowships and NTU scholarships: NTU scholarship information (also see the list below).

Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoc typically join for 2–3 years and help build a healthy and vibrant research environment. They are expected to lead independent research, publish high-quality papers, contribute new project ideas, mentor students, and (when relevant) support proposal/grant development.

If you see a strong research fit, please feel free to reach out even if no specific postdoctoral opening is currently advertised.

You are also welcome to apply for postdoctoral fellowships (see the list below).

Research Assistants, Master’s Students, and Visiting Researchers (Open Year-Round)

I welcome applications from individuals seeking research experience in robotics, biomechanics, human movement science, control, and human-robot interaction.

Projects may involve experimental studies, data analysis, modeling and simulation, algorithm development, or hardware implementation.

How to Apply

PhD Applicants (Two-Step Process)

Step 1 — Inquiry (pre-screening)

Before submitting an official application in the NTU portal, applicants are encouraged to complete the inquiry process below to receive early feedback on research fit and potential supervision alignment.

Submit Inquiry Form

If Google Forms is inaccessible or restricted, you may instead email your materials directly to me (subject: “Join Inquiry - [Position] – [Your Name]”).

Required materials (single combined PDF preferred):

  • CV (include publication links if applicable)
  • Statement of research interests (1-2 pages) describing your research experience and contributions, research interests, and intended future PhD research direction.
  • Transcripts (Bachelor’s and/or Master’s, if available; include courses and grades)
  • Optional supporting documents (e.g., thesis, representative papers, or project/code portfolio)

Step 2 — Official NTU Application

If encouraged after Step 1, please submit your formal application to the:

NTU MAE PhD Programme

When selecting a potential supervisor, choose “Others” and enter “Jiaen Wu”.

Postdoctoral Applicants

Please submit the inquiry form (no NTU portal step):

Submit Inquiry Form

Materials:

  • CV
  • Research statement / plan (1–2 pages): key prior achievements, future directions, and fit with the lab
  • Optional: 2 representative papers (links or PDFs)

Research Assistant / Master’s Students / Visiting Scholar Applicants

Please submit the inquiry form (no NTU portal step):

Submit Inquiry Form

Materials:

  • CV
  • Brief statement of interests (≤1 page): background, what you want to work on, and availability
  • Optional: transcript and/or portfolio link

More Information

If Google Forms is inaccessible or restricted, email your materials (one combined PDF) to me with subject: “Join Inquiry – [Position] – [Your Name]”.

⚠️ Note: Emails with different subject lines may be missed or filtered. Please use the exact format above.
